Meet Mrs. Galli:

I grew up in Champaign, IL and graduated from Illinois State University with a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and a minor in Spanish. Shortly after graduation, I ventured out to Colorado and accepted a mid year teaching position in Mapleton Public Schools. I taught bilingual second grade, then fourth grade for two years. It has been an exciting journey in Colorado! I met my husband, Luke Galli, one day hiking Longs Peak. We were married in November 2008. He is also a teacher in Denver Public Schools at the Denver School of Science and Technology. We have a rambunctious golden retriever named Bonito. In our free time, we like to travel, garden, hike, bike, camp, and ski!

Year at a glance-Courses Information:

Because parents are an integral part of their child's education and success, it is important they know and understand the second grade curriculum and standards. Listed below is a broad overview of content areas and major topics and themes we cover in second grade. It would be beneficial to your child to review them and do activities at home or in the community that are centered on these concepts.

Science:

~Sound Systems
~Rocks and Minerals
~Plants

Social Studies:images-2.jpg

~Civics
~Economics
~Geography

Math:

Within the Everyday Math units, at times, lessons will be taught based on similar concepts rather than page sequence. Also, just like literacy, math will be taught in larger whole group lessons, but for some part of everyday, smaller groups will be formed to support the needs and provide appropriate challenges for all students. A couple of days a week our GT teacher, Mrs. Eichenberger will help support enrichment and extensions in the classroom. Mrs. Starbuck, our Class Size Relief teacher, will take groups to ensure that all second graders receive small group instruction and provide opportunities for more one-to-one teacher time.

Everyday Math Games

Parental Involvement:

We welcome parents to come and get their hands dirty as we dive deep into the curriculum! A volunteer schedule will be posted on our second grade Wiki page on Google calendar. Please check the calendar periodically and sign up for a blank time slot.

Homework policy:

Students will receive math homework every night except Friday, in their red homework folder. The folder must be returned daily. Students may have occasional science and social studies homework that will be sent home with their literacy packets.

images-1.jpgBirthdays:

Birthdays will be celebrated the last Friday of each month. Children will plan the party. And parents will be asked to contribute a treat.

Positive Behavior Support:

Positive Behavior Support is not a specific practice or curriculum. It’s a general approach to preventing problem behavior. The benefits of a school wide implementation include: reduction in problem behavior, increased student engagement, improved academic performance, and improved family involvement. At Steck, we are STARS!
